Alka Balain

A postgraduate in Management, Alka Balain is an educator turned poet. Alka’s poems have been shortlisted for the Glass House Poetry Award 2024, the Poetry Festival Singapore-Catharsis in 2021/2023, the Wordweavers Contest 2022, and the Wordsmith Award (ALS 2021). She is the club chair of the Writing Enthusiasts’ Club, Indian Women’s Association, Singapore, and Chapter head (Singapore) of the Asian Literary Society(ALS), India. She organises literary events for the Asian Literary Society, working on creating an all-inclusive community in Singapore. She spearheaded and curated indigenous language panel discussions in Singapore, published on UNESCO’s Indigenous Language portal. Her writings have appeared in Kitaab, Usawa Literary Review, AlSphere, DREICH Review, The Green Journal, Poetry India(wing of Ethos Literary Journal), The Hooghly Review, Journal of Asian Arts, Culture and Literature (JAACL), Setu Bilingual, Visual Verse, Amethyst, Shot Glass Journal and elsewhere. Her poems have been published in Singapore, the UK, the US and India. Alka enjoys painting, walking in nature, and swimming. She has exhibited her art with several galleries in Singapore. One of her artworks is a part of the permanent mural collection at the Indian High Commission in Singapore, along with 75 other artists under the aegis of Gnani Arts. (75th India’s Independence) She is a member of the Women’s Artists Association in Singapore and a member of the Japan International Academy of Arts. She released her first book of poetry, Parijat Petals, with Hawakal Publishers, India. It is a collection of mystical poems.
